Glamour is back! Return to splendour! Designers have declared a return to dressing up. However, given that they no longer dictate what we wear and that our lifestyles today simply don’t call for a wardrobe full of party-ready dresses, should we be paying any attention?
For what seems like an age now, comfort and convenience have trumped shimmer and shine when it comes to after-dark dressing, and being overdressed has been considered a sartorial sin. Going out used to be an excuse to wear something fabulous, but with off-duty looks now dominating this has given many of us an excuse not to. And what we wear day-to-day has become increasingly casual too – I’m just as likely to be asked by my clients to source office appropriate sweatshirts and leggings that double as gym and school gate-wear, as work-friendly dresses and the perfect pair of jeans.
I know that from a practical point of view, we should all probably applaud this approach to getting dressed, but there is a flip side. Where’s the fun? “If you look your best, you feel your best, and if you feel your best you have more fun,” wrote Hayley Bloomingdale in this month’s British Vogue, and I have to agree with her. Making just that little bit more of an effort translates into a huge amount of difference in terms of how we feel, and given everything that’s going on in the world around us at the moment, fashion’s ability to deliver that feel good factor is something definitely worth holding on to.
Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting we all adopt full-on dressed up dazzle, but with Christmas fast approaching, that one time of the year when even the most sequin shy among us succumb to a bit of sparkle, we have the perfect excuse to make a bit of a style statement, however simple.
So, here are some styling tips to help you put the wow back into your wardrobe. From simple but statement-making accessories to elevate your current clothes, to ways to work some glamour into your everyday, I hope there’s something that inspires you…
